Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

Conference Proceedings of the International Conference of Environmental Remote Sensing and GIS are published by the Faculty of Geodesy of the University of Zagreb. The peer-review process is conducted in a double-blind manner, and all manuscripts are reviewed by at least two independent reviewers from different countries. Prior to peer review, a member of the editorial team conducts an initial assessment of each manuscript. Following the peer-review process, the editorial member provides a decision recommendation to the editor. The published papers reflect the quality of the authors’ work and the institutions supporting them. The views expressed in the published papers do not necessarily reflect those of the editorial board. Clear standards of ethical behaviour are required for all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, editors, reviewers, and publishers. These ethical statements are based on the COPE Guidelines for Best Practice for Journal Editors.

1. Duties of Editors

Publication decisions

The editors are responsible for deciding which of the papers submitted to the proceedings should be published after a double-blind review. The editor may be guided by the policies of the Editorial Board and constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism. The editor may confer with other members of Editorial Board or reviewers in making this decision.

Peer Review

The editor shall ensure that the double-blind peer review process is fair, unbiased, and timely. Research articles are reviewed by at least two independent external reviewers, with additional opinions sought when necessary. Reviewers are selected based on relevant expertise, and best practices are followed to prevent fraudulent reviews. The editor evaluates disclosures of conflicts of interest and self-citation suggestions to ensure objectivity.

Fair play

The editor will always evaluate the manuscripts on their intellectual merit, regardless of the race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.

Confidentiality

The editor and the editorial board must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest

  • Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor's own research without the written consent of the author.
  • Privileged information or ideas obtained during the review process must be kept confidential and may not be used for personal gain.
  • The editor should withdraw from reviewing manuscripts if he/she is in a conflict of interest arising from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or affiliations with any of the authors, companies, or institutions associated with the papers.

Handling Misconduct

The editors are responsible in taking appropriate action in cases of suspected ethical misconduct, including plagiarism, data falsification, or duplicate publication.

2. Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to Editorial decisions

Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the author may also assist the author in improving the paper. Reviewers do not know the identity of the author as all identifying information is extracted from the paper prior to review. The reviewers' comments are confidential to the editors and are anonymized before they are forwarded to the author.

Promptness

Any selected reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and withdraw from the review process.

Confidentiality

Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.

Standards of Objectivity

Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.

Acknowledgement of sources

Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the editor's attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.

Disclosure and conflict of interest

Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions associated to the papers.

3. Duties of Authors

Reporting standards

Authors of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.

Data access and retention

Authors may be required to provide the raw data in connection with their paper for editorial review and should be prepared to provide public access to such data. Also, they should in any event be prepared to retain such data for a reasonable time after publication.

Originality and plagiarism

The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if they have used the work and/or words of others that this has been appropriately cited or quoted. Applicable copyright laws and conventions should be followed. Copyright material (e.g. tables, figures or extensive quotations) should be reproduced only with appropriate permission and acknowledgment. The originality of content of all submitted manuscripts will be checked using Turnitin plagiarism screening service. By submitting the manuscript to the journal, the author agrees to any necessary originality checks that the manuscript may have to undergo during the evaluation or the production process. Manuscripts found to contain plagiarism, or unethical content will be rejected.

Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication

An author should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

Acknowledgement of sources

Proper acknowledgement of the work of others must always be provided. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.

Authorship of the paper

Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Where there are others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research project, they should be acknowledged or listed as contributors. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included in the paper, and that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.

Hazards and human or animal subjects

If the work involves chemicals, procedures, or equipment that have any unusual hazards inherent in their use, the author must clearly identify these in the manuscript and ensure that any studies involving human or animal subjects conform to national, local, and institutional laws and requirements (e.g. WMA Declaration of Helsinki, NIH Policy on Use of Laboratory Animals, EU Directive on Use of Animals) and confirm that approval has been sought and obtained where appropriate. If requested by editors, authors should supply evidence that the reported research received the appropriate approval and was carried out ethically (e.g. copies of approvals, licenses, participant consent forms). Researchers should not generally publish or share identifiable individual data collected during research without specific consent from the individual (or their representative).

Disclosure and conflicts of interest

All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.

Fundamental errors in published works

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their own published work, it is the author's obligation to promptly notify the editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.
